back to school days

as usual, summer is flying by and it’s almost back to school time again. i’ve been enjoying life at summer house and i’m trying to ignore the call of responsibility, at least for another few weeks. i haven’t TOTALLY unplugged this summer, but i’ve dialed it back a lot. the ocean air and expansive view has really put me in a different state of mind, and the prolonged northeast heatwave had accentuated everything summer. i love the fall, but like many of us, there is a nagging sense of “doing” that comes with it, and this is the first year in many that i’m not ready to let go of these summer daze!

the van gogh brothers shook off the dust and played the magical moon barn on saturday, august 6th for the Music + Tailgate series (picture above by kristy jill). it was a hot and steamy night and we had a blast with a nice full house that included old pal mark zamcheck and family and my daughter caroline with hubby collin and friend mer in tow. we stretched out on covers that included “put the lime in the coconut” with a mash up of sunshine superman and woolly bully, and got the barn rocking the percussion and hand drums. it was. a great time and a great warm-up for our return to our vincent’s lifetime residency on saturday, september 9th.

with the impending “doing,” i’m focusing in on a return trip to LA, probably in october, to stir the pot with my west coast pals, meet the new crew at heavy hitters and figure out what to do with our recent releases, “ghost,” and “backroads.” i feel like i need to push those babies out of the nest and see if they’re ready to fly. typically, i’m happy to see what we can license to film and tv, but these two records feel like they deserve a little extra tlc. we shall see what fate has in store for them.

after a long hiatus, i’m beginning to write again and we’ve scheduled some rehearsals to vet the new songs. i still feel like it’s too soon to return to the studio, but we’ll see what autumn has in store for the muse. that’s often a fertile time for songs, and once i get the bug to record one of them, the others usually follow.

well, that’s about it for now. the dog days officially end on august 15th, so i guess we’d better plan to get our new notebooks and pencils soon. in the meantime, enjoy the remaining weeks of summer and look for our upcoming shows here and at johncatemusic on facebook.

love,

jc
